Apoprotein (a) has homology with plasminogen and may inhibit fibrinolysis by competing with plasminogen. Thus it provides an impoant link between haemostasis and blood lipids and plays a major role in atherogenesis. Normal serum level is 0-3 mg/dl. Elevated levels of lipoprotein (a) above 30 mg/dL are associated with increased risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Moderate reduction is possible only with niacin and the primary approach to therapy is reduction of LDL-C.
