Dementia The development of multiple cognitive deficits manifested by both (1)(2) causing significant impairment in social or occupational functioning and decline from a previous level of functioning. (1)memory impairment (impaired ability to learn new information or to recall previously learned information) (2)one (or more) of the following cognitive disturbances: aphasia (language disturbance) apraxia (impaired ability to carry out motor activities despite intact motor function) agnosia (failure to recognize or identify objects despite intact sensory function) disturbance in executive functioning (i.e., planning) Memory Impairment: sho-term memory refers to the inability to learn new information or to recall previously learned information(recent events), disorientation, confusion in new environments (i.e., traveling or moving). Long-term memory is impaired only in later stages of illness. Procedural memory is to be retained longer. sho-term memory-long term memory-procedural memory Cognitive Impairment: Aphasia, Apraxia, Agnosia, Executive Function: Impairment in planning, organizing, sequencing, and abstracting Visuospatial functioning can also be impaired Functional Impairment: disengagement from usual activities, interests, impairment in social relationships, social roles, difficulty performing instrumental activities of daily living at first, and later activities of daily living. neuropsychiatric or behavioral symptoms of dementia: Delusions, hallucinations, agitation, dysphoria, anxiety, apathy, irritability, euphoria, disinhibition, aberrant motor behavior, night-time behavior disturbance, appetite eating abnormalities these symptoms commonly co-occur with dementia and are often the cause of the greatest caregiver distress.
