2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG) (also known as 2,3-diphosphoglycerate) is a small molecule created as a side product of glycolysis from 1,2-BPG. A low PO2 in peripheral tissues promotes the synthesis of 2,3-BPG in erythrocytes from the glycolytic intermediate 1,3-BPG. Physiologic changes that accompany prolonged exposure to high altitude include an increase in the number of erythrocytes and in their concentrations of hemoglobin and of BPG.
