Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are chronic inflammatory bowel diseases that pursue a protracted relapsing and remitting course, usually extending over years. The diseases have many similarities and it is sometimes impossible to differentiate between them. One crucial distinction is that ulcerative colitis involves only the colon, while Crohn's disease can involve any pa of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus. Ref Davidson edition23rd pg 813
