Other mechanisms may also play a role, such as reduced erythropoeisis. It is associated with low serum iron, reduced total iron binding capacity and abundant stored iron in tissue macrophages. Peripheral smear shows predominantly normocytic and normochromic picture or sometimes microcytic hypochromic picture.
