Negative reinforcement involves removal of unpleasant stimuli following a response, e.g. if the parent gives in to the temper tantrums thrown by the child, he reinforces this behaviour.
It is important that the child should not be embarrassed or criticized, rather help should be offered to deal with this difficult habit. Negative reinforcements in the form of threats, nagging and ridicule would only entrench the habit.
