Transplacental (or veical) transmission: Disease agents can be transmitted transplacentally. This is a form of direct transmission. Examples include the TORCH agents (Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus and herpes virus), varicella virus, syphilis, hepatitis B, Coxsackie B and AIDS.
