Parasympathetic nerves are secretomotor. They reach the gland through the auriculotemporal nerve. The preganglionic fibres begin in the inferior salivatory nucleus; pass through the glossopharyngeal nerve, its tympanic branch, the tympanic plexus and the lesser petrosal nerve; and relay in the otic ganglion.
