Medullary carcinoma of the thyroid (MTC) originates in the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid gland. These C cells produce calcitonin. Tumor lysis syndrome refers to the constellation of metabolic disturbances that may be seen after initiation of cancer treatment. Tumor lysis syndrome is typically associated with acute leukemias and high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphomas, such as Burkitt lymphoma. Clinically, the syndrome is characterized by rapid development of hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, and acute renal failure.
