Copper is excreted in the bile into GI tract from which it is not reabsorbed. So normally urine contains only traces of copper. Since copper homeostasis is maintained almost exclusively by biliary excretion, any disease which hampers its biliary excretion will lead to accumulation of Cu in the liver (Ex: cholestasis, hepatitis and cirrhosis)In Wilson disease, a genetic condition in which a mutation in the gene for a copper-binding P-type ATPase (ATP7B protein) blocks the excretion of excesscopper in the bile.
