B. cepacia gained notoriety as the cause of a rapidly fatal syndrome of respiratory distress and septicemia (the "cepacia syndrome") in CF patients. Besides infecting the lungs in CF, B. cepacia appears as an airway colonizer during broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and is a cause of VAP, catheter-associated infections, and wound infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes infections (e.g., sepsis, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections) primarily in patients with lowered host defenses. It also causes chronic lower respiratory tract infections in patients with cystic fibrosis, wound infections (cellulitis) in burn patients, and malignant otitis externa in diabetic patients. Pseudomonas maltophilia (renamed Xanthomonas maltophilia and now called Stenotrophomonas maltophilia) also cause these infections, but much less frequently.
