Somatic cells undergo division by a process known as mitosis. This is divided into 4 periods. The first is prophase, during which the chromosome filaments shoen, thicken, and become visible. At the end of prophase, the nuclear membrane disappears and metaphase begins. Following this, anaphase occurs, at which time the centromere divides and each daughter chromatid goes to 1 of the poles of the spindle. Telophase then ensues, at which time the spindle breaks and cell cytoplasm divides. A nuclear membrane now forms, and mitosis is complete. Each daughter cell has received chromosome material equal in amount and identical to that of the parent cell. Because each cell contains 2 chromosomes of each pair and a total of 46 chromosomes, a cell is considered to be diploid.
