Mayapple (May Apple) Toxic Principle : Podophyllin (purified form: podophyllotoxin) Clinical Features : Exposure of eyes causes irritation with conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal ulceration, and iritis. Ingestion results in nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting,and diarrhoea. fever, tachypnoea, tachycardia, hypotension, ataxia, dizziness, lethargy, confusion, and altered sensorium. Treatment : No specific antidote is known. Emesis may be useful during the initial phases of toxicity. Hemodialysis is ineffective, but charcoal hemoperfusion has reversed acute symptoms within hours. Topically administered resin should be removed with petroleum jelly. If eye contact occurs, flush with copious amounts of warm water and consult a physician or poison center immediately.
