Contraindications of tonsillectomy Haemoglobin level less than 10 g%. Presence of acute infection in the upper respiratory tract, even acute tonsillitis. Bleeding is more in the presence of acute infection. Children under 3 years of age. They are poor surgical risks. Overt or submucous cleft palate. Bleeding disorders, e.g. leukaemia, purpura, aplastic anaemia, haemophilia At the time of the epidemic of polio. Uncontrolled systemic disease, e.g. diabetes, cardiac disease, hypertension or asthma. Tonsillectomy is avoided during the period of menses.
