When a DNA strand break occurs prior to chromosomal duplication (G1 and early S phase of the cell cycle; the break is replicated and both sister chromatids will carry the damage. Resultant aberrations are termed chromosome aberrations. If the cell is irradiated after chromosomal duplication, the break will occur in only one of the sister chromatids and generate a chromatid aberration.
