The most common indication for liver transplantation in end-stage liver disease?

Liver transplantation--the replacement of the native, diseased liver by a normal organ (allograft)--is now a lifesaving operation applied more optimally in the natural history of an end-stage liver disease. The preferred and technically most advanced approach is ohotopic transplantation, in which the native organ is removed and the donor organ is inseed in the same anatomic location.Potential candidates for liver transplantation are children and adults who, in the absence of contraindications, suffer from severe, irreversible liver disease for which alternative medical or surgical treatments have been exhausted or are unavailable.
