GAMMA GANDY BODIES WERE SEEN IN SICKLE CELL ANEMIA ,CML AND CIRRHOSIS .THEY ARE DEPOSITS IN CONGESTIVE SPLEENOMEGALY WHICH CONTAINS : IRON +CALCIUM + FIBROUS TISSUE OF SPLEEN Sickle Cell Anemia 1) Single nucleotide substitution ("point mutation") in the gene for the beta chain of hemoglobin. 2) Different amino acid gets placed in the peptide chain.. 3) Beta chain synthesized from the sickle-cell allele does not "fold" correctly and hempglobin molecules "clump" together forming a red blood cell that resembles a sickle. 4) Sickled cells die early (10-20 days vs. 120 days) producing anemia. 5) Sickled cells clog the fine capillaries, leading to lack of oxygen in target organs. * A blood test can check for hemoglobin S -- the defective form of hemoglobin that underlies sickle cell anemia. In the United States, this blood test is pa of routine newborn screening done at the hospital. But older children and adults can be tested, too. * In adults, a blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm. In young children and babies, the blood sample is usually collected from a finger or heel. If the screening test is negative, there is no sickle cell gene present. If the screening test is positive, fuher tests will be done to determine whether one or two sickle cell genes are present. Check for a low red blood cell count (anemia) will be done.
