Otitis media with effusion (OME or glue ear) is defined as fluid in the middle ear space without clinical signs of inflammation or acute symptoms of illness. Otitis media with effusion usually follows an episode of acute otitis media. The guideline recommendation for the management of OME is that ventilating tubes should be placed after an effusion has persisted for 4 months and is accompanied by a bilateral hearing impairment of 20 dB or greater.
