Honeycomb lung refers to the gross morphology of the lung in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (Hamman-Rich syndrome, diffuse fibrosing alveolitis, usual interstitial pneumonitis). These appearances are composed of a solid, rubbery lung with prominent interstitial fibrosis interspersed with air spaces, some cystically dilated, lined by cuboidal epithelium. Many other diseases characterized by diffuse interstitial inflammation or fibrosis may also end up with "honeycomb" lung.
