Bremelanotide functions by activating the melanocoin receptors. It was shown to be effective in treating sexual dysfunction in both men (erectile dysfunction or impotence) and women (sexual arousal disorder). Unlike phosphodiesterase inhibitors like sildenafil, it does not act upon the vascular system, but directly increases sexual desire the nervous system. The primary target for ED will be patients non-responsive to PDE-5 inhibitors, with patients receiving bremelanotide either as a monotherapy or in combination with a PDE-5 inhibitor.
