Discharge from Baroreceptor cause inhibition of Rostral Ventrolateral medulla. The baroreceptor are stimulated by distension of the structures in which they are located. Their afferent fibers pass the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves to the medulla. These fibers release glutamate to excite neurons in the nucleus of tractus solitarius (NTS). These NTS neurons then excite neurons in the caudal ventrolateral medulla (CVLM). These CVLM neurons release the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) into the RVLM to reduce the firing rate of these. Thus, reducing the sympathetic outflow.
