The species of leishmania exist in two forms:-1. amastigote (aflagellar) 2.promastigote (flagellated) in their life cycle. Amastigote (Non-flagellate form) occurs in the infected lesion of man in reticuloendothelial cells like macrophages, neutrophils, endothelial cells of liver, spleen, bone marrow, etc. Amastigote form also called as LD body. It is an obligate intracellular form and infective to sand-fly. Promastigote form is an extracellular form and infective to humans. It is mainly found in sandfly and in culture.
