Several fixatives have been used for bone biopsies: absolute or 70% ethanol, buffered 10% formalin and methanol, and osmium tetroxide. For routine mineralized bone histology, ethanol at room temperature is the fixative of choice. Formaline is more potent than ethanol but, like some strong fixatives, has a tendency to leach out calcium, aluminum, and tetracycline from bone.
