High-Yield Explanation
When one labyrinth becomes permanently damaged, as, from viral labyrinthitis, the loss of input from that side is interpreted in the brain as a constant rotation or tilt. Acutely, the person may have the sensation of spinning, and nystagmus may be present. With time, the brain compensates for this new state by readjusting the null point at which the system is again at equilibrium when at rest. Then the sensation of spinning and the nystagmus ceases.Ref: Hazarika; 3rd ed; Page no: 283
