Left ventricular hyperophy is enlargement and thickening (hyperophy) of the walls of your hea's main pumping chamber (left ventricle). Left ventricular hyperophy can develop in response to some factor -- such as high blood pressure or a hea condition -- that causes the left ventricle to work harder. The most common cause of LVH is high blood pressure (hypeension). Other causes include athletic hyperophy (a condition related to exercise), valve disease, hyperophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM), and congenital hea disease. Ref Davidson 23rd edition pg 472
