Macula lies temporal to the disc, approximately 2 disc diameters away i.e 3mm. Macula lutea is a round shallow depression in the vitreal surface of the retina. Macroscopically it appear as a yellow spot because of the local accumulation of exogenous carotenoid pigments. The bottom of macula lutea is called fovea centralis. Fovea centralis is 0.5mm in diameter. It is characterised by the presence of long cones and complete absence of rods. It is the point of greatest visual acuity.
