MeningococcemiaAcute meningococcemia* In primary stage, it may mimic a viral disease (nonspecific).* Any organ of the body can be affected by vasculitis and thromboembolic disease.* Black central arch and surrounding ring or erythema is the characteristic meningococcal rash and it is often seen before more serious signs develop.Rapid progression is seen in a fulminant case with disseminated intravascular coagulation, septic shock, adrenal hemorrhage, acidosis, and renal and heart failure.* Petechiae and purpura +- meningitis = purpura fulminans (DIC)* Emergency treatment: IV penicillin
