The most commonly recognized complications of meningitis are diffuse and focal brain edema, hydrocephalus, seizures, aerial and venous cerebro vascular complications (vasculitis with ischemia and stroke, intra parenchymal bleeding, subarachnoid hemorrhage and venous sinus thrombosis), myelitis, cranial nerve palsies, and hearing loss. Seizures can occur in up to 30% of the patients and hence is the most frequent complication.
