High-Yield Explanation
Osteomalacia means softening of the bone. It is the adult counterpa of rickets and is primarily due to deficiency of vit D. This results in failure to replace the turnover of calcium and phosphorus in the organic matrix of bone. Clinical features include bone pain, muscular weakness and spontaneous fracture usually in the spine and may result in kyphosis. Xray: Diffuse rarefaction of bones (osteolytic), looser's zone (pseudo-fractures), triradiate pelvis in females and protrusio-acetabuli ( acetabulum protruding into the pelvis) are typical radiological findings. Bone biopsy from iliac crest shows excessive uncalcified osteoid. Serum calcium and phosphate levels are low and alkaline phosphatase is high. Ref: Maheshwari 3/e, Page 264
