Hyponatremia can result from diarrhea, vomiting, burns, diuretic administration, and administration of sodium-poor parenteral solutions. Seizures and coma usually are associated with severe hyponatremia and may be life-threatening. Acute hypernatremia usually is caused by severe water depletion with diarrhea especially in children.
