Chronic complications include vascular disease, nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy. Vascular complications include atherosclerotic coronary aery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease and hypeension. Background nephropathy develop in 95% of people 20 years after being diagnosed with diabetes. Neuropathy develop in 50% of diabetics 20years after the diagnosis of diabetes. Distal symmetric polyneuropathy is the most common type found. Diabetic nephropathy develops 20-25 years after being diagnosed with diabetes.
