Make sure you realize the following:> Wernicke's Encephalopathy is the Acute reaction to severe thiamine deficiency.> It is characterized by the triad of:> Ophthalmoplegia (includes B/L lateral rectus palsy); Alexia; Global confusion> Korsakoff's syndrome is the delayed / long term manifestation of severe thiamine deficiency and follows Wernick's encephalopathy. This is frequently persistent.> It is characterized by:> A gross memory disturbance (amnesia)> Confabulation
