D.C Dutta 7th Ed. 1432, 433, 435PUERPERAL PYREXIA (FEVER)* A rise of temperature reaching 100.4degF (39degC) or more on 2 separate occasions at 24 hours apart (excluding first 24 hours) within first 10 days following delivery is called puerperal pyrexia.* Causes of pyrexia are Puerperal sepsis, Urinary tract infection, Mastitis, Infection of cesarean section wound, Pulmonary infection, Septic pelvic thrombophlebitis etc.B PUERPERAL SEPSIS* An infection of the genital tract which occurs as a complication of delivery is termed puerperal sepsis.* Sources of infection may be endogenous where organisms are present in the genital tract before delivery.* Anaerobic streptococcus is the most common cause of Puerperal sepsis.* The primary sites of infections are: Perineum, Vagina, Cervix, Uterus* Remember: A case of puerperal pyrexia is considered to be due to genital unless proved otherwise.
